Police Arrest 4 Suspected Oil Pipeline Vandals in Aba

The vandalism led to pipeline leakages, which later want up in flames on Sept. 30, and left many people dead.

Mr Ezekiel Onyike, Police Public Relations Officer, Abia Command, confirmed the arrest in Aba on Thursday.

Onyike said the suspects were arrested with Jerry cans containing petroleum products, adding that they were already being interrogated by the police.

He said that they would be arraigned as soon as a prima facie case was established against them

``Oil pipeline vandalism is a serious crime, as soon as a prima facie case is established against them, they would be arraigned,''  he said.

Reports say that the Abia Commissioner for Petroleum and Solid Minerals Development, Chief Don Ubani had, in a statement recently, said that more than 15 persons died and 20 severely burnt by fire in the incident.

But Onyike told newsmen that only two people were confirmed dead by police investigation.

Mr Simple Nwamkpa, Chairman of the Reactivation Committee of NNPC Depot at Osisioma, near Aba, also told newsmen that he saw one dead body when he visited the scene with some people.

The depot was re-opened in July.
