Falodun dropped the warning in an interview on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that people who burst their pimples had a tendency to form scars on their faces.
The dermatologist said that for some reasons, the dark skin had a greater tendency for scare formation, more than the white skin.
“For people who burst their pimples they have a greater tendency to scar formation.
“Many times, when people attempt to bust the pimples, they burst them when they are not ripe enough and apart from that even when something comes out, what you see is just a small proportion of what is actually inside the pimple itself.
“A large portion of it goes down into lower layers of the skin; it goes into the demise and may stimulate scar formation.
“So, many times when you see people with scars from acne; from pimples; there is always the effect of busting; tampering with the lesion.
‘’We advise at least for the common person, leave your pimples alone; allow it to evolve through the natural process; it will clear.
“They give a spot initially but usually those spots clear, but when you had to bust them with force there is a greater tendency for scar formation.’’
Folodun said that pimples were caused by a combination of effects of various things which included hormones, hormonal imbalance, infections and blockage of the hair follicles or sebaceous glands.
He said that some pimples were caused by some drugs like oral contraceptive pills and people who used and worked with a lot of oil based products.
“There is something called pomade acne that is people who use a lot of oily products; there is a type of acne that can come from that; there is a type of acne that come in oil workers; people that work with a lot of oil and oil-based agents can have some form of acne.
“But the common acne is the basic one that is just due to hormonal changes due to infection of the pilosebaceous unit.’’
Speaking on forms of treatment, the dermatologist said that treatment was individualised, adding that there was the topical preparation and systematic preparations ``Systemic means things that you can take by mouth, orally to enter into the blood stream. For those that have complications already from pimples that already have scars, we talk about treatment with laser.’’
He said creams and antibiotics could also be prescribed depending on the individual, adding that antibiotics must be used only as prescribed by a dermatologist.
“Once someone notices a big pimple on the face, the person just wants to take antibiotics and you use two capsules within a day and then you stop, this is common practice and people need to stop it.
“The truth about it is that these things are used in a controlled manner, for some people it may lead to some form of resistance if it is not used properly.
“Let me tell you that the antibiotics people use for acne is not a short-term treatment, at times it could treat for three months, six months.
“So don’t use any antibiotics because your friend is using it and it is wrong to just go to any chemist and say give me two capsules of this and you use it for three days.
“Those things don’t do anything to acne, rather they just build up resistance and I know that is very common in our environment, people abuse antibiotics a lot.”
The skin expert said that pimples were found more in places where there were a lot of oil bearing glands, such as the face, chest and back.
