The Chelsea left-back's charge comes after his outburst response to the official disciplinary report on the John Terry racism case, when the England international wrote: "Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFT***S".
The punishment comes three months after his fellow international Rio Ferdinand was fined €55,000 (£45,000) for re-tweeting a tweet labelling Cole a "Choc ice" over his defence of John Terry, who was alleged to have racially abused his brother Anton.
The FA seem determined to eradicate such online indiscretions, having published a set of guidelines for social media use on Wednesday.
The code of conduct bans England internationals from tweeting about a game in the 24 hours prior to kick-off, and warns that any messages discussing "the opposition, management or individuals could all result in disciplinary action".
The rules emphasise the players' obligation to act as "role models," and states that England internationals could be stripped of the captaincy should they fail to live up to the required "expectation and responsibility."
