Mr Nasir Kaka, the Lagos Zonal Coordinator of NTDC told newsmen in Lagos that the hotels, which were also licenced, were operating in Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ondo and Ogun states.
He said that 305 of the registered hotels are in Oyo State, 23 in Osun, 41 in Ekiti, 37 in Ondo State, 156 in Ogun, and 1,006 in Lagos State.
``Our officials have been going on registration drive to see that hotels operating in the zone are registered.
``The registration exercise started in 2001 and we have registered about 1,568 hotels. It is an ongoing thing and there are still some hotels that are yet to register,’’ he said.
Kaka said that the registration and licencing of hotels became necessary as it would enable the corporation keep a data on each hotel for proper supervision.
``We put all the registered hotels in a database and on our website for prospective guests to know the credible ones,’’ he said.
He said hotels that had yet to register with NTDC should do so, and that any hotel found operating illegally would be penalised.
Kaka warned that the corporation would not hesitate to close down any hotel operator that failed to renew his licence.
He said that the corporation would not relent in its effort at ensuring that ``Nigeria is a safe destination for both Nigerian and foreign tourists’’.
