Information reaching ionigeria.com states that having been stranded for several hours, many of the travelers had to abort their journeys and returned to either Port Harcourt or Warri.
An eye witness and victim of the hugely stressful and nerve-racking situation who spoke to ionigeria.com by telephone on condition of anonymity because of his position in government said, “The road is virtually impassable. Over 300 vehicles are stuck. Those that are lucky have had to turn and returned to where they were coming from”.
Asked about the source of the water, he said, “The source of the water cannot be ascertained for certainty”.
Heavy downpours in recent weeks have caused extensive devastation and forced many families into makeshift camps in different parts of the country. An estimated 134,000 people have now been affected by the floods and about 148 people have lost their lives in about 21 states of the Federation, the Nigerian Red Cross states in its website.
Several Nigerian highways have been affected by flood, increasing the agony of travelers. The most critical has been the Abuja-Lokoja highway that was rendered impassable for several days, with government having to build an emergency bye-pass to enable motorists pass through.
