Police arrest suspected kidnappers of Nkiru Sylvanus

The state Commissioner of Police, Adisa Bolanta, who made the disclosure at the police headquarters, in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said the state is now a graveyard for kidnappers and criminals.

The command paraded 20 other suspects who were arrested over various crimes ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping and arson.

Also paraded were four suspects who kidnapped the four year old daughter of the publicity secretary of the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Blyden Amajirionwu.

While parading the suspects Bolanta said three teams of police operatives carried out a serious man hunt for Nkiru’s kidnappers and eventually arrested the four suspects, Okoro basil, Stella Opara, Festus Olegeme and Chijioke Chima at their hideout at Imerienwe in Ngor Okpalla LGA.

He said the suspects in their separate statements had confessed to the crime, adding that they implicated Chinedu Okoro alias Mopol, Ifeanyi Onyekwe alias Alaye, Ezekwem Onyekwe and Ifeanyi (surname held) as the main kidnappers of the Nollywood actress.

Are you in the habit of mixing Alcohol & Energy drinks? Watch it

The whopping caffeine dose and other additives in those drinks may be more harmful than you think.

"Unintentional caffeine overdoses have resulted in serious illness and rare deaths from caffeine poisoning," says Dr. Kent A. Sepkowitz a physician at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York, in an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association. "Caffeine poisoning has only recently been characterized."

Considered "dietary supplements" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, energy drinks do not have to conform to the same regulations as traditional caffeinated sodas or over-the-counter caffeine pills. The same additives that give energy drinks their special status may also interfere with the body's ability to metabolize caffeine. This could lead to increased or prolonged levels of caffeine in the blood.

Alcohol can also be very dangerous when added to the equation, experts say. Very little is known about the combined effect of alcohol mixed with energy drinks -- or AMED, for short. These include cocktails mixed at bars -- like the popular RBV, or Red Bull and vodka -- and alcohol and energy drinks consumed separately but within the same night. Premixed caffeinated alcoholic drinks were essentially banned by the FDA in 2010, reports ABC News.

The current theory is that the high dose of caffeine in energy drinks offsets the sedating effect of alcohol, making your brain think you're less drunk than your body feels. This disconnected and inebriated version of you might be more likely to engage in risky behaviours such as drunken driving or sexual assault. The masked intoxication may also lead people to drink more than they would normally.

However, there is very little evidence to support these theories. Studies show that compared to the usual alcohol drinker, people who drink AMED are more likely to leave the bar drunk, try to drive drunk or engage in other risky behaviour.

In another JAMA editorial, lead author Jonathan Howland at the Department of Emergency Medicine at Boston University said that AMED consumers may be "inherently more prone to risk-taking behaviours. It is possible that personality traits such as impulsivity and sensation seeking cause AMED consumption, rather than AMED causes risky behaviour."

So, if you're thinking about using energy drinks to stay up into the wee hours to welcome in the New Year, you have to take care.

Osaze apologises for attacking Keshi

The West Bromwich striker had in the wake of the release of the Nigeria provisional team list for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations taken to his Twitter account and made disparaging comments against Keshi, the team captain and some Nigeria Football Federation officials. Past coaches, including Samson Siasia and Lars Lagerback, were not spared and continued days later with direct hits at ex-Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba.

However, the England-based forward said his mistakes were made in a fit of anger.

On Sunday, he described Chris Green whom he had abused also “as a good man.”

“I remember it was Green who settled my case with Siasia then, but I was too angry when he called me over this matter, and was impatient to listen to him,” he said in a comment published by Mtnfootball.com.

“My comment was not directed at him personally, but to those who made the decision, but I think I overreacted then.”

On his face-off with Keshi, he said, “I called the coach two or three times within that period, maybe two or three days before the list was made public and told him of my commitment to be part of the Nations Cup, and have told my (club) coach I will be going to the Nations Cup.

“I told the coach I was ready to report to camp by January 3, even before other professionals start reporting to camp, if I were in his programme for the Nations Cup, and even told him to feel free to drop me, if I were not in his programme.

“I felt betrayed after that seeming heart-to-heart discussions with the coach few days to the release of the team list and he could not hint me I was not in his plan for the Nations Cup.

“I am human and open to errors by the way I may have taken the issue, and regret the whole controversy, and want to put all this behind me now and focus on my club career, while wishing the team the best of luck as a Nigerian.”

In Faro, Portugal, Russia-based Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike as well as Italy-based midfielder Ogenyi Onazi arrived at the Eagles camp on Sunday. Raheem Lawal, who now plays in the Turkish second division showed up just as the players prepared for a training session.

Keshi has said apart from Ikechukwu Uche, who has been given January 6, January 5 remains deadline for all players.

Spain police arrest 17 pimps who forced Nigerian women into prostitution with 'Juju threats'

An investigation began when police detected in January that around 10 women had been brought into the country illegally using a small boat.

Police said that following an investigation its raids seized computer equipment, mobile phones, false identity and work permit documents, as well as objects which detectives said were allegedly used in "juju rituals."

Officers tracked down the suspected pimps in cities throughout Spain and arrested 16 Nigerian nationals and one Ugandan citizen, a statement released Sunday said. It was not clear when the arrests took place

Nude display at Calabar Christmas Carnival: Kudos and knocks

While Some tourists and residents have condemned the `distasteful’ appearances of some of the female participants, others do not see anything wrong in it.

A US-based Nigerian, Mr Ikpafak Udofia, expressed displeasure at the costumes and the dress code of the girls on parade, asking ``is it modernisation or madness? ``I love my culture and I love my people but such nudity in the name of cultural exposition or whatever they called it is ridiculous. ``For women to walk on the streets almost naked in the name of carnival, is dishonourable to me, to my mother and wife and I wonder what the designers of those costumes were thinking,’’ he said.

Another US-based Nigerian Miss Gloria Ekong, however, called for caution in condemning the carnival attires.

Ekong said: ``whether these girls have a secret agenda or not; their intention is to have fun with creative costumes. Trust me they don't have to be in that attire to carry out their `secret agenda’. ``I personally wish that l have a killer body like that. We can be too judgmental under the guise of religion.’’

Another Nigerian in the Diaspora, Mrs Rosie Udo, said that there was nothing untoward in the appearance of the maidens’ attires. `` If these were men with extended belly, skinning legs, flat butt with skimpy wrappers, will that be honourable?

Today's African men are so disgusted with women and their bodies.” Another Nigerian, Mr Chris Udoh, based in Port Harcourt said: `` as a man, I will not lose sleep if a woman decides on her own to walk naked in the streets. ``It is a good saving for a man because what he would have paid money or begged to view is given out by the owner free-of-charge. ``Walking naked is part of 'uncommon transformation' of the African women to their ancestral days when men used to live in caves. ``The truth is that African women who walk naked on the streets are cheapening their natural worth and beauties. ``

Though it can buy short term attention but what happens thereafter, becomes a burden to the seller only,’’ he said.

Editors condemn incessant attacks on Journalists

This is contained in a communiqué signed by the Guild President, Mr Gbenga Adefaye and Assistant Secretary, Mr Steve Ayorinde and made available to the Newsmen on Sunday in Abuja. The Guild called on the authorities to engage the media according to the Constitution and Rule of Law and protect media practitioners and the freedom of expression.

The Guild, however, implored all journalists to observe the ethics of the profession, publish verifiable facts only and continue to be socially responsible in the discharge of their duties. It noted the security challenges facing the country and hoped that with the cooperation of all, the incoming year would witness an improvement as promised by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Guild advised the Federal Government to invest in an improved health care delivery system in the country and asked all public officers to take the people into confidence about their state of health.

``Instead of putting the media in the embarrassing situation of speculation when public officers stayed away from their duty posts for inexcusable long period,” it stated.

The Guild however resolved to conduct its Biennial Convention in February 2013, to elect new officers since the tenure of the current Standing Committee would lapse in first quarter of next year.

N78 million Fraud Update: Panic in Bayelsa as AGF refers case to Bayelsa DPP for prosecution.

Our investigations disclosed that sequel to the conclusion of investigations by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police Force on the Petition by a Civil Society Group, Transparency and Good Governance Coalition, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Unit referred the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federal for legal advice.

In a December 21, 2012 letter to the Bayelsa State DPP and signed on his behalf  by E.K. Ugwu Esq., an Assistant Director, Adoke said, “this office has found that there is a prima facie case of conspiracy and fraudulent misappropriation and stealing by conversion of public funds against the leadership of the present Bayelsa State House of Assembly, to wit, Hon. Konbowei Benson Friday (Speaker), Hon. Victor Otonye Sam Ateki (Deputy Speaker) and Mr. Aaron Nicodemus Timiye (the Clerk of the House).

Continuing, the AGF said, “it is on facts that the said Conference was meant for the House leadership and all other members were at the ‘observer status. In this regard, these other members should be exonerated from the alleged offences as the House leadership were the brains behind the whole scenario, however, some of these other members of the House should be used as prosecution witnesses during the trial---“

The matter,  according to, the letter was referred to the Bayelsa state DPP for trial in Bayelsa State High Court because the offences were committed in Bayelsa State and the money stolen and misappropriated also belong to the Bayelsa State government.

Our investigations further revealed that there have been subterranean moves right from the Police Special Fraud Unit to kill the case but the fact that Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), a renowned human rights activist is the lawyer to the petitioners has been a major deterrent against sweeping the matter under the carpet.

Apple’s Tim Cook Takes 99 Percent Pay Cut: Is this really correct?

The CEO who has been at the helm of the Cupertino-based company since founder Steve Jobs died in Oct. 2011, saw his compensation decline because he got no stock award this year. However, he did get a 51 percent increase in salary and bonus.

According to documents filed to the Securities Exchange Commission Thursday, Cook earned a salary of $1.36 million and received a cash bonus of $2.8 million, making his compensation for the year $4.2 million.

Compensation for Cook is down after the CEO was awarded one of the highest compensation packages on record in the prior year.  In 2011, Cook received $376.2 million in stock, which boosted his pay package to $378 million. According to the Associated Press, that stock owned by Cook is now worth $510 million. Under the terms of the stock grant, half the shares will vest in 2016 and the rest in 2021 if he stays with the company.

However, a careful analysis of the figures released by the company shows that he actually got a salary increase. According to Graeme McMillan of Didital Trends, "Despite the lower compensation however, the current CEO of the trendsetting tech — and increasingly lifestyle — company has actually been given a pay raise for the year. Confused?".

Continuing, McMillan said, "In 2011, $376.2 million of Cook’s pay came from the various stock awards Apple issues every two years. The loss of the awards disguises the fact that Cook’s base salary actually increased this year, with Apple’s regulatory financial filing on Thursday revealing that he received $1.4 million for 2012, up from $900,000 in 2011. The $4.2 million figure is reached when that base salary figure is combined with the $2.8 million bonus he received for the year".

The news seems disarmingly bad for the company at first glance, but not so much so upon further investigation.

It’s been a roller coaster ride for Apple and its shares, which hit an all-time high of $705 on Sept. 21 but have since slid to $513. For the year, though, the shares are up 27 percent.

In July, Apple reported lower than expected third quarter revenue of $35 billion, while analysts had expected $37 billion. The company reported higher profit of $8.8 billion for the third quarter, up from $7.3 billion the previous year.

Earlier this year, Cook acknowledged a misstep by the company in its panned Apple Maps, and issued an apology to its customers for the frustrations. In December, Cook told Bloomberg Businessweek about plans to manufacture Mac computers in the United States.

“Next year we are going to bring some production to the U.S. on the Mac. We’ve been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it. It will happen in 2013,” Cook said in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.

Despite the move to bring Apple to America, the company has seen its price targets slashed by some analysts who worry that the market for iPhones and iPads is becoming saturated.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “at least five analysts have cut their price targets for Apple since Dec. 16, with some saying Apple’s purchases from suppliers indicate iPhone and iPad sales may not meet projections.”

“Warri Refinery not Shut Down” – NNPC

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Fidel Pepple, NNPC’s Acting Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division in Abuja.

“The clarification becomes necessary due to the report by a section of the media that the Warri Refinery has been shut down for a routine maintenance which will last for 21 days. There is no iota of truth in that report. The Warri Refinery is up and running. The day-to-day operations’ report from the refinery shows that it is producing at 63 percent of its installed capacity,” he said in the statement.

Pepple said that even on Christmas day when the report was ran by a national daily, the refinery was running.

“The plant has no immediate maintenance issues that will require it to be shut down for 21 days as reported”, the NNPC spokesman said.

He urged members of the public to discountenance the report, even as he said that NNPC was doing everything within its powers to ensure an all-round availability of petroleum products during the festive season.

Pepple also called on journalists to verify information with relevant authorities before going to press. He said wrong information could cause the panic-buying of fuel and aggravate the situation in the fuel supply and distribution chain. Many parts of the country, especially Abuja, have been experiencing fuel scarcity during the yuletide in spite of assurances from NNPC.

Apple Loses Another Copyright Lawsuit in China

Apple is to pay compensation to eight Chinese writers and two companies for violating their copyrights, the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court ruled on Thursday.

Earlier in the year, a group of Chinese authors filed the suit against Apple, saying an unidentified number of apps on its App Store sold unlicensed copies of their books. The group of eight authors was seeking 10 million Yuan in damages.

"We are disappointed at the judgment. Some of our best-selling authors only got 7,000 yuan. The judgment is a signal of encouraging piracy," Bei Zhicheng, a spokesman for the group, told reporters.

Apple said in a statement that it takes copyright infringement complaints "very seriously".

"We're always updating our service to better assist content owners in protecting their rights," Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said.

China has the world's largest Internet and mobile market by number of users, but piracy costs software companies billions of dollars each year.

Apple, whose products enjoy great popularity in China, has faced a string of legal headaches this year. In July, Apple paid 60 million yuan to a Chinese firm, Proview Technology, to settle a long-running lawsuit over the iPad trademark in China.

Tips for a Healthy Heart

Get moving

Do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. One way to achieve this target is by doing 30 minutes of activity on five days a week. Fit them in where you can, such as cycling to work.

Give up smoking

Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.

Manage your weight

Being overweight can increase your risk of heart disease. Stick to a well-balanced diet low in fat and high in fruit and vegetables, combined with plenty of physical activity.

Drop the salt

To maintain a healthy blood pressure, stop using salt at the table and try adding less to your cooking, or cut it out completely. You’ll soon get used to it. Also, watch out for high salt levels in processed foods. Check the food labels: a food is high in salt if it has more than 1.5g salt (or 0.6g sodium) per 100g.

Get your five a day

Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Add dried fruit to breakfast cereal, and add vegetables to your pasta sauces, curries, etc.

Eat oily fish

Eat oily fish twice a week. Fish such as mackerel, sardines, fresh tuna and salmon are an excellent source of omega-3 fats, which can help to protect against heart disease.

Walk off stress

If you're feeling under pressure, clear your mind with a walk. It will help put your ideas in order and reduce tension. If it's a brisk walk, it will also count towards your daily activity.

Cut saturated fat

Small changes to your diet can have positive health benefits. Choose semi-skimmed over full-fat milk, leaner cuts of meat and steam or grill foods rather than frying.

Drink less

Alcohol can be fattening. If you added three or four gin and tonics to your usual daily diet, you could put on nearly 2kg over four weeks.

Read the food label

When shopping, look at the label on food packets to see what the product contains. Understanding what is in food will help you make healthier choices.

Eat garlic

Study after study has confirmed garlic’s abilities to lower blood pressure, reduce phospholipids and cholesterol, strengthen heart action, increase immune response, reduce platelet clumping and clotting (thus reducing strokes) and stabilize blood sugar levels. Eat garlic raw or lightly cooked, several cloves a day.

Yobo Hits Back at Odemwingie on Twitter

Odemwingie said via Twitter that recent Eagles captains have only looked out only for themselves and so the team lack a leader.

Yobo has now hit back at his national teammate, who was sensationally dropped from the squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa

“Osaze has been reckless, disrespectful to most people. He’s not a kid, he should grow up because we cannot continue to baby sit him. He is responsible for his problems,” Yobo told Lagos radio Brila FM on Friday.

“This is not the first time he has been disrespectful. He is fighting all the coaches and at the World Cup he also disrespected me and he later apologised.

“He is not the (Lionel) Messi or (Cristiano) Ronaldo of Nigeria. He should look himself in the mirror.”

The Fenerbache star gave credit to coach Stephen Keshi for the provisional squad he picked for the AFCON, while admitting that he was surprised Obafemi Martins, Osaze, Taye Taiwo and Kalu Uche were not considered.

“I will give him credit for the squad. He will score 95 percent even though one or two should have been there,” said the former Everton defender.

“I’m sure he would have had some sleepless nights in selecting his team. Kalu Uche, Martins, Taye and Osaze not being there was a surprise but the coach must have his reasons and he cannot call everybody.”

Yobo also admitted that at 32 this is most likely his last AFCON.

“I think I have to admit it that this may be my last Nations Cup. We have to allow younger players to get their chance,” said the central defender, who has featured in five Nations Cups.

British Actress Kate Winslet Marries for Third Time

The 37-year-old, best known for her starring role in the 1997 blockbuster "Titanic", married Ned RocknRoll, a nephew of music and aviation tycoon Richard Branson.

The private ceremony was attended by Winslet's two children from previous marriages and "a very few friends and family", according to the publicist, and took place in New York earlier this month.

"The couple had been engaged since the summer," Winslet's spokeswoman said in a statement.

Winslet has been nominated for six Academy Awards and won once for her lead role in "The Reader".

Her other notable performances include Iris Murdoch in "Iris", Clementine Kruczynski in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and April in "Revolutionary Road".

That film was directed by Sam Mendes, whom Winslet wed in 2003 and divorced seven years later. Her first marriage was to Jim Threapleton, which lasted from 1998 to 2001.

According to online reports, RocknRoll had his name changed by deed poll from Ned Abel Smith and is an executive for Branson's space flight venture Virgin Galactic.

The Sun newspaper said the New York wedding was so secret that even the couple's parents did not know about it.

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who co-starred with Winslet in Titanic and Revolutionary Road, gave her away, the newspaper said.

UK tells US: keep Piers Morgan, we don't want him

The first was launched on 21 December in response to Morgan's on-air comments in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings criticising US gun culture.

The petition urges the US to "deport" Morgan for being "engaged in a hostile attack against the US constitution by targeting the second amendment [the right to bear arms]."

Over 80,000 people have so far signed this petition, which is hosted on the White House official website.

However a second campaign was launched on 25 December, urging the US government to do precisely the opposite and keep Piers Morgan in America.

"There are two very good reasons for this," the second petition explains. "Firstly, the first amendment. Second and the more important point. No one in the UK wants him back."

"Actually there is a third," the petition adds. "It will be hilarious to see how loads of angry Americans react."

This particular petition currently has just over 5,000 signatures.

White House officials have said they will respond to any petition that passes the 25,000 signature threshold.

The outspoken former tabloid editor has launched something of a personal crusade for greater gun control measures in the wake of the December 14 massacre at Sandy Hook elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

Last week Tuesday, Morgan held a prickly interview with Gun Owners of America executive director Larry Pratt, appearing to become incensed and incredulous when Pratt suggested more, not fewer, weapons as the solution.

"You're an unbelievably stupid man, aren't you?" Morgan asked during the heated debate. "You have absolutely no coherent argument. You don't actually give a damn about the gun murder rate in America."

Following the interview, a Texas journalist posted a petition on the White House website alleging Morgan "is engaged in a hostile attack against the US Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment."

"We demand that Mr Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens," it says.

Many Americans follow a literal interpretation of the Second Amendment, which enshrines the "right to bear arms" in the US Constitution.

Morgan insists America can outlaw military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines without infringing on people's constitutional rights and says he has no quarrel with the Second Amendment.

A defiant Morgan refused to back down from his position.

"Ironic US gun rights campaign to deport me for 'attacking 2nd Amendment rights' - is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?" he posted on his Twitter feed on Saturday, referring to freedom of speech provisions.

Morgan continued to post incendiary comments on the gun control debate, including a response on Sunday morning to an NBC interview with a top official in the powerful pro-gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association.

"Watching @davidgregory expose Wayne Lapierre for what he is - a dangerous, dim-witted, deluded menace to American safety. @NRA," Morgan tweeted.

And to the petition's sponsor, he wrote: "Bring it on, you goon."

At least some Americans have come out in support of Morgan.

In one message, reposted by Morgan, Lee Cox in Arizona wrote: "I'm a native-born US citizen, and I agree 100% with Mr. Morgan. If he goes back to the UK, should I go with him?"

America has suffered an epidemic of gun violence over the last three decades including 62 mass shooting incidents since 1982. The vast majority of weapons used have been semi-automatic weapons obtained legally by the killers.

Obasanjo says fire incident at his residence ``minor’’

``It was a minor fire that affected my PA’s (Personal Assistant's) office.

``It may have been some electrical problem. I am in high spirit. We thank God,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone.

He said that men of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps and the Ogun State Fire Service had put out the fire.

Obasanjo said: ``I hope that we can all see that it was not the whole building that was burnt by fire.

``It is just the office of my secretary and we thank God for everything.

``Ile Obasanjo to jo e wa lo bu si,’’ meaning - The fire incident will only add beauty to Obasanjo's house.

ionigeria.com can reveal that some officials of the state have since gone to sympathise with the former president.

They include the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, Deputy Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Alhaji Shuaibu Salisu, State Security Service officials, politicians and other top government functionaries

Edo State government condemns US travel advisory on Edo

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the state Government, Prof.Julius Ihonvbere, it pointed out that the warning issued by the US Department suggested the US Department of State is not in tune with events in Nigeria.

“While we are unclear on the parameters used by the Department of State, we however make bold to state, and this can be confirmed from the security agencies in the country, that Edo state is the safest in the South-South region of Nigeria and one of the safest in the country” it declared.

According to the Edo SSG, “It beats the imagination of discerning minds that while some states which record violent crimes on a daily basis in the country are excluded from the list, Edo State which has been commended by all, including the World Bank which, through its Country Director, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly said: “Edo state’s social indicators are above the national average” and which had earlier through her predecessor, Mr.  Onno Ruhl said: “Edo State is one of the states in Nigeria where the willingness to change is the fastest in Nigeria”, is included in the offensive US list”.

According to the statement, “those who come to equity must do so with clean hands. If the US Department of State could include Edo in its advisory list, then it should also issue a travel warning to citizens of the world to avoid Connecticut where 20 innocent Elementary School Students and six of their teachers were cut down in the confines of their classrooms just two weeks ago.

“It would do good to also issue a travel advisory to people of the World  on New Jersey which, according to the Cable News network (CNN)  “has already suffered 65 violent deaths in 2012” and on Philadelphia where the “the year-to-date total of homicides is 322. Last year, 324 were killed.” it stated.

It added: “While we concede that the security of lives and property is an integral part of development, we make bold to state that no society is eternally perfect.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has invested heavily on security more than any government before it and the gains of such investment are there for all to see.

“The Government of Edo State therefore rejects the travel warning issued by the US Department of State and wishes to assure Edo State sons and daughters and other visitors to the state of their safety during their stay” it stated

Drogba heads Ivory Coast’s Nations Cup squad

The China-based striker is hoping to lead his country to the title in South Africa after missing out on penalties to Zambia in Gabon in the 2012 edition.

Manchester City’s Toure brothers Kolo and Yaya, the African Player of the Year, were among half a dozen players called up from the English Premier League.

The only non-foreign based name on Lamouchi’s list was goalkeeper Ali Badra.

Only six of the squad for the January 19-February 10 tournament did not figure at the 2012 Nations Cup.

Ivory Coast are preparing for the competition with a January 6-16 training camp in Abu Dhabi, with a friendly pencilled in against Egypt, who failed to qualify, on January 14.

“I’ve selected these 23 players to perform good work in Abu Dhabi and I hope that they will all be available to go the Nations Cup,” said the team’s French coach.

In South Africa, the Ivorians are drawn in Group D with Algeria, Tunisia and Togo.

Janet Jackson, Billionaire Boyfriend Wissam Al Mana Engaged

A source says that Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana "gave her a huge, expensive ring" earlier this year.

"She's afraid it will get lost, so she keeps it locked up!"

The luxury-brand mogul, 37, will spare no expense on his nuptials to Miss Jackson, set for spring in Qatar.

The affair "will cost millions," reveals a second Jackson insider. "He is flying in all of Janet's friends and family on private jets." (Quick refresher: The L.A.-based singer has seven siblings and more than 20 nieces and nephews.)

Adds the source, "He wants to get a top chef to create a custom menu."

The ceremony will undoubtedly be "a circus," another source says.

The twice-wed Nutrisystem spokeswoman, 46 - who split from Jermaine Dupri in 2009 - is eager to make it official with her love of two years.

"She wants kids," says the Jackson source. "If she can't have them, she will adopt."

He said that Nigeria and Brazil had similar culture that needed to be show-cased.

``The dancing school will be built in other to exchange cultures that both countries have in common and to promote a friendly atmosphere, ’’he said.

He urged the Federal Government to improve infrastructure and to support foreign investors by creating good and safe environment.

``Government should make a firm policy that would give room for investors to explore the industry.

``Government should reduce charges, taxes and levies to encourage more investors into Nigeria,’’ he said.

He said that samba dance was reputed to be a world-class dancing style and that the costumes could be used to promote both nations’ cultures.

``We are all happy to be part of the Carnival Calabar Festival 2012, and hope to come again,” he said.

Taiwan Warns Against Non-essential Travel to Nigeria

Nigerian police have received intelligence that Nigeria's Islamist sect Boko Haram is likely to launch another attack in Abuja during the Christmas to New Year period, said Bruno Shen, deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of West Asian and African Affairs.

"We thus advise our nationals who plan to visit Nigeria for business to stay alert, especially those who plan to visit the capital," he said at a regular news briefing.

The ministry already issued an "orange" travel alert for Nigeria in late November, warning Taiwanese travellers to avoid unnecessary visits to the violence-torn country.

Nigerian official data pointed out that attacks by Boko Haram has resulted in more than 3,000 deaths since 2009, when the group was established, Shen said.

There are some 100 Taiwanese businessmen living in Lagos, Nigeria's economic center, but so far, no deaths or casualties have been reported, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Shen also warned Taiwanese nationals against making non-essential visits to other African countries facing internal military conflicts such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

The ministry has also issued an "orange" travel alert for these two countries.

Nigerian Pilgrims Visit Tomb of Jesus

Reports say that the pilgrims had earlier visited the Antonio Fortress, the courtyard where Jesus was tried before Pontus Pilate and sentenced to death.

From the Fortress the pilgrims proceeded to Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, and prayed at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over the burial place of Jesus.

The pilgrims also visited the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed a man, who had been bedridden for many years.

Beside the pool is the Church of St. Anne, dedicated to Anne, the grandmother of Jesus Christ.

"Many people passed through the gate but did not help the sick man, but Jesus came by and healed him.

"Pray that Jesus will not pass you by," Venerable Peter Ogunmuyiwa said in a brief sermon at the church.

Nigerian Activist Keeps Family Legacy Alive

The daughter of Nigerian politician and philanthropist Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, Hafsat was at her second year studying at Harvard, United States, when her father was sent to prison by Nigeria's junta after claiming the country's 1993 presidential election.

Although MKO Abiola garnered almost 60% of the vote, the West African country's military rulers annulled the results and eventually charged the former businessman with treason. His imprisonment prompted a wave of demonstrations, led partly by Hafsat's mother and Abiola's second wife, Kudirat.

In 1996, Kudirat Abiola was shot in the head when the car she was traveling in was attacked on a Lagos expressway. Hafsat was still in the United States with her siblings when news came of her mother's assassination.

"All five of us were in the U.S. when we heard and we stood in a circle and we held hands," remembers Hafsat. "We just stood there and then I said to my siblings that we won't let her down, and really since that time we've been trying to make sure that we do not let her down."

Two years later, in July 1998, MKO Abiola died while still in custody. Everything Hafsat has done ever since is done through the prism of her loss and her desire to continue the legacy left by her parents.

After Kudirat's assassination, Hafsat founded an NGO in her mother's memory, the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), a group working to strengthen Nigeria's civil society.

Along with promoting female leadership by offering training and support to women who want to run for office and be active in public life, KIND is also tackling issues such as violence against women.

"We wanted to also work with protecting women from domestic violence, raising awareness about the issue of domestic violence," says Hafsat. "Also, we're drawing tacit public acceptance of it. If the public challenges people who abuse their wives, their daughters, their sisters, their girlfriends, it will stop, it will be not so easy to continue."

Last year, Hafsat was appointed as a special adviser to the governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amonson. Hafsat runs a conditional cash transfer project for the state, where poor pregnant women are encouraged to use available healthcare facilities for safer pregnancies in a bid to reduce maternal mortality rates.

According to the World Health Organization, maternal mortality in Nigeria is 630 per 100,000, more than 20 times as high as in Europe or the United States.

"We need to drive the women into our primary health centers," says Hafsat, explaining that many pregnant women choose to not visit a doctor due to high costs.

"But for us the cost of their loss of life is too high for us and society to bear, so we have to incentivize them to overlook the cost," she says.

"So what we're doing is that we pay them to go to the doctor six times before delivery, which is a lot of times but we want to have enough time to be checking if there's any complications arising that we have to prepare for.

"We pay them to deliver in the hospital, so each time they go to give birth we give them a small amount of money. It's not a lot but it will cover transportation and a little bit extra."

Hafsat says that through her efforts and those of others in the country, the work of her parents can reach a new generation of Nigerians.

"I think that if they were to do it all over again they would do it exactly the same way," says Hafsat of her parents. "Or if not, they would even make more sacrifices because I think we only live once and we must do what we can."

Calabar Carnival Records More Foreign Visitors

He told newsmen in Calabar that the number of foreign visitors recorded in 2012 was higher compared to that of 2011.

``There had been an increased influx of foreign visitors every year and I belief in year 2013, the number of visitors would increase, ``Ojoi said.

According to him, the foreign visitors are from Brazil, Jamaica, Korea Republic, Ghana, Cameroon and Trinidad and Tobago.

He said that the Calabar Carnival had grown tremendously to become a leading forum for leisure and tourism destination in Africa.

``There was increasing number of exhibitors and visitors from all over Nigeria and the world, participating at the carnival.

``The carnival has attracted both local and foreign visitors over the years, `` Ojoi said.

He added that the festival would give both local and foreign tourists the opportunity to feel the tourism potential of the state and to know about the people’s culture.

Ojoi said that 22 states of Nigeria were participating in the ongoing carnival, compared to 12 states that participated in 2011.

He said that further increased influx of both foreign and local participants would be expected at subsequent editions of the carnival.

Aliyu Blames Slow Development of the North on Insecurity

Aliyu made the remark during an interactive session with journalists at his residence in Minna.

He said that insecurity caused by the sect in the North had made it difficult for investors to invest in the region for fear of losing their investments.

``I am not satisfied with the slow pace of development in the northern region, but under my leadership as chairman of Northern Governors' Forum, we have given the region good leadership.

``Because of the kind of unity, solid decision and encouragement that we have done, if not for security situation that intervened, we will have been what we call a paradise.

``In terms of progress, I am not satisfied with the situation the North is now, because of insecurity slowing down economic activities to the extent that when you invite investors, they are afraid to invest their money for fear of losing their investments,’’ he said.

He said that the development of any state in the North depended on how the governor implemented the decisions of the Northern Governors Forum.

``I can only implement the decisions in Niger state and not in other states,’’ he said.

Aliyu, however, said the slow economic activities was not peculiar to the region alone but the country at large as the activities of the group had given the country a negative image abroad.

Lagos to Kano by Train

The fact of the matter is that the all important transportation sector achieved a major milestone in the year 2012.  Indeed those who engendered the significant leap forward in the transportation sector   did not roll out the drums in keeping with the mood of the nation which has been decidedly sober   for some time.  However history, the chronicler of man’s failures and successes, will record that in December 2012, Nigeria achieved a major milestone in the transportation sector with the completion of the rehabilitation of the Lagos –Kano rail line.

The project was not only completed but was also put to use for the service of Nigerians. For the first times in decades, commuters left Lagos via the train route and arrived safely in Kano.  And now regular train services have been fully restored on the route.  It came on the heel of the complete restoration of the Lagos –Abeokuta, Ibadan and Jebba rail lines which have since gone into operation. The ferrying   of passengers though significant is not the only major gain of the resuscitation of the Lagos –Kano rail line by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.  For the first time in several decades the haulage of petroleum products through the rail system has also commenced in Nigeria. Tankers bearing petroleum products are now lifted from Ebute metta to Kaduna and other parts of the country with functional rail services through the wagons of Nigerian Railway Corporation. This has been made possible by new purposely built wagons that have the capacity to lift 900,000 liters of petroleum products at once. This, according to mathematicians, is the equivalent of putting twenty seven tankers on the road.

What is more is that the products will get to their destination in good enough time and the wear and tear on our roads will be reduced as well as the associated dangers posed by the ferrying of combustible materials through densely populated towns and villages .The event did not make the headlines of most newspapers and other news media. Not because it was not a unique milestone worth celebrating but such good news like the type recorded by the Nigerian Railway Corporation are not meant for the front pages. Nothing sells like bad news and good news often becomes footnotes to the main headlines of the day. But this good news even if it is not celebrated on the pages of newspapers will have far reaching positive effects on the people and economy of Nigeria.

Indeed, it is not just because a number of Nigerians are now enjoying the rail services that informed the writing of this piece. The spin off effects of the event of December 21 when the service was flagged off are such that would impact positively on the country’s social and economic development. Idris Umar, transport minister, who supervised the flag off simply hit the nail on the head when he stated that the Lagos -Kano rail line is another promise kept by the Jonathan administration which has said it would restore train services because of its strategic importance of providing efficient and cheap transportation to Nigerians. Train service is a cheap and effective means of transportation which until recently had been all but abandoned by successive administration with the country paying dearly for the neglect. Dr Jonathan who promised to transform the transportation sector simply consolidated the resuscitation process started by his predecessor, the Late Umar Musa Yar Adua and the gain of continuity and tenacity of purpose is what is now being enjoyed on the Lagos –Kano Train route.

For Adeniyi Sijuwade, managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the benefits of the restored rail tracks include enhancement of trade and commercial activities and employment generation all through e routes of the rail lines. The economic benefit is already being reaped.  Haulage firms and manufacturers of heavy goods have started taking full advantage of the services. Feelers from the NRC indicate that    firms dealing in heavy equipment and goods have contacted the NRC to take advantage of the haulage potential. The benefits of this development would be numerous. Because it is relatively cheaper and safer for products and goods to be transported via rail consumers will get them at cheaper rate and the incidence of accidents will be reduced to the barest minimum.  As the NRC extends the haulage services through the rail line to other parts of the country and stakeholders key into the new development, roads across the length and breadth of the country will last longer.

Those in the know like engineers have blamed the deplorable conditions of roads across the country on the haulage of heavy goods and materials by articulated vehicles on the country’s road network. And the social and economic vibrancy associated with train terminal towns will return. This is a welcome development in this period of economic downturn.

The resuscitation and commencement of full services on the rail network in   the country should not make the ministry of Transport and Nigerian Railway Corporation go to sleep. It is not enough that the rail tracks are active and up and running again. All steps and measures should be taken to prevent a return to the bad old days when the rail lines were simply allowed to rot and the wagons became unserviceable. The NRC and its supervising agencies and ministry should not make the mistake of the past when maintenance culture took flight as soon as new initiatives were put on the table.

The NRC, should as a matter of course, put measures in place to ensure that it sustains and improves the services being rendered. The management should devise a round the clock maintenance of the rail tracks and the passenger and goods wagon.

This should be done through the deployment of well trained and motivated maintenance crew and personnel to all points of operations. Security of personnel and passengers should also be paramount.

Train accidents could be deadly as such adequate measures should be put in place to prevent such occurrence. The sanctity of the rail lines should also be maintained through round the clock surveillance to prevent acts of sabotage.

Personnel should also be deployed to all the level crossings to prevent   incidents of trains colliding with vehicles or pedestrians at the crossings. The watchword should be safety, comfort and functionality at all times.

For now let the train ride continue.

Nigeria to Develop MOU with Cameroon on Ladgo Dam- official

The official at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources said in Abuja that the technical mission to Cameroon on the issue of Ladgo dam would visit the country  between Thursday and Friday to discuss modalities for managing water resources.

It is recalled that unregulated water released from Ladgo dam located 50km  south of the City of Garoua on the Benue River caused huge flooding in Nigeria in September.

The official said the visit would create an avenue for the two countries to discuss how the water resources of the Benue basin should be managed in a sustainable and less disastrous manner.

“What informed the decision to visit Cameroon is as a result of the September floods. One of the causes of the floods apart from excessive rainfall was the unregulated release of water from Ladgo dam.

“What we are going to do with the visit is to establish a bilateral cooperation that will lead to sustainable management of water resources of the Benue Basin.

“We are going there in preparation for the rainy season so that people will  not say that Nigeria is not prepared in case of any re-occurrence of floods.

“We are going there with a draft copy of MOU on how to achieve sustainable management of the water resources,’’ the official said.

According to the official, Cameroon has set up a team of experts which has also prepared an MOU for the same purpose.

The official said the MOUs from the two countries would be presented at the meeting, adding that if the parties agreed on the issues raised, it would be signed.

In addition, the official said the visit would also provide an avenue to discuss possible collaboration on the safety and management of Lake Nyos.

Lake Nyos lies close to the axis of the Cameroon volcanic line, which extends 1,500km from the Gulf of Guinea through south-western Cameroon and into northern Nigeria and northern Cameroon.

The UN Environment Programme and Office of the Human Affairs commissioned a study on the lake in September 2005 and the findings indicated that Lake Nyos might collapse within five to 10 years.

The imminent collapse of the lake will send over 30 million cubic metres (MCM) of water into Katsina Ala River in Nigeria all the way down through Benue and Niger River systems.

However, the Federal Government has commenced the construction of Kasmbilla dam, designed to serve as a buffer dam to avert the danger posed by Lake Nyos in Cameroon.

The dam project located in Taraba, is expected to be completed in 2013.

Security Chiefs Urge Communities in Riyom, Plateau, to Work Together for Peace

The heads of security agencies made the call on Christmas Day when they visited Bagad village of Bachit District of Riyom Local Government Area,  where a woman died in an attack on Sunday.

Another woman was injured in an attack during which unknown persons set 10 thatch houses on fire.

Maj.- Gen. Henry Ayoola, the Commander of the Special Task Force in Plateau, who led other security chiefs on the visit, said peace would return to the area if the Berom and Fulani forgave each other and worked for peace.

Ayoola said they were in Bagad to condole with the people and share in their grief, adding that the perpetrators of the crimes would be brought to book.

``We are here to let you know that we are concerned about what happened and to share in your feelings. We will do everything possible to arrest the perpetrators,’’ he said.

Ayoola said the security agencies would protect all law abiding citizens irrespective of  tribe and faith.

``We are only enemies of those who made themselves enemies of peace and we will hunt them until they change their ways,’’ he said.

Mr Chris Olakpe, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, threatened to arrest community leaders in which attacks occurred persistently.

Olakpe said, ``I would hold the chiefs responsible.

``’They are the leaders of people and should have proper knowledge of happenings of their communities.’’

He said that no religion preached violence or encouraged killing and warned that law enforcement agents would deal with anyone, who killed in the name of religion.

Olakpe advised the youth not to allow themselves to be used by wicked leaders to perpetrate evil.

Mr Bature Sodangi, the Commandant of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps,  advised community leaders to constantly talk to their people on the need for peace.

Sodangi wondered why people who had been living together for centuries would suddenly become enemies and urged them to resolve their differences and move on for peace.

Mr Christian Ojobo, the State Director of State Security Service, said that peace would continue to elude the people of the area unless they decided  to change the situation.

Ojobo said ``our visit alone would not bring peace unless you agree to be in peace by tolerating one another’s shortcomings.’’

He advocated inter-cultural marriages between the Berom and Fulani as one of the ways of building trust and love between the communities.

Chief Gyang Dalyop, the District Head of Bachit, and Malam Mohammadu Adamu, the Fulani community leader, as well as Mr  Dalyop Dantong, the father of the late Sen. Gyang Dantong, among others received the security chiefs.

Total, French Embassy to Give Scholarships to 5 Nigerians Each Year

A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Mr Charles Ebereonwu, the Manager (External Communication) of Total, said that the scheme was part of the company’s efforts to contribute to the development of the country’s education sector.

It noted that the Joint Scholarship Scheme (‘TQJS’) titled ``Total E &P Nigeria Ltd. (TEPNG) /Quai d’ Orsay’’ would take effect from the 2012/2013 academic session.

The statement, however, said that the pilot stage of the scheme had commenced this year with one candidate sponsored to study international law in France.

It stressed that the agreement for the training was signed by Mr Guy Maurice, the Managing Director of TEPNG, and Amb. Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, the French Ambassador to Nigeria.

The statement quoted de Labriolle as saying that the scheme was based on the need to contribute to the training of Nigerians in different fields, while commending Total for contributing to the development of the Nigerian society.

It also quoted Maurice as saying that the initiative was a reflection of the company's confidence in the country and a continuation of what it had been doing in the past.

``The agreement makes provision for a four-man steering committee to manage the scheme on behalf of the parties and each of the international scholarship is worth about 54,000 Euros,’’ Maurice said in the statement.

Total has been collaborating with top-rated institutions across the world, as part of its human capacity development efforts.

It is also the main sponsor of the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), a post-graduate institute at the University of Port Harcourt, managed in collaboration with the prestigious Institute France du Petrole (IFP) in France.

Exhibitors Laud High Turnout of Fun Seekers at Bar Beach

Reporters who toured the exhibition stands mounted at the beach, gathered that the level of patronage was higher when compared to that of previous years.

An exhibitor, Mrs Alice Titus, said that the picnickers’ turnout at the carnival was quite impressive, adding that she consequently recorded bumper sales.

``I have made about N30, 000 today and you can see that I am still selling; this is an indication that this year will be good for us here,’’ she said:

Besides, Mr Adam Sanni, a ``suya’’ seller, said: `` I make between N10,000 and N15,000 daily; this is far better than my earnings in previous year.

``I paid about N10, 000 to the carnival’s organisers for the space I am occupying but I am sure I am going to make a huge profit because of the large number of fun seekers who turn out for the event.’’

Reports say that some picnickers, who were riding horses, taking photographs and watching sea waves, also expressed satisfaction about the organisation of the carnival.

Mrs Olajumoke Adeola, a banker, who noted that this year's celebration witnessed a massive turnout of fun seekers, stressed that the event was well-organised, while adequate security arrangements were put in place.

Mr Bitrus Simpson, photographer, also lauded the high turnout at the beach, adding that this would ensure greater patronage for all businesses therein.

``During last year's Christmas, I grossed about N70, 000; this year, I have made over N120, 000 and I still hope to make more.

``In fact, during previous festivals, we snapped pictures at the rate of N120 per copy but today, a copy goes for N200.''

Mrs Doris Chukwu, a media relations manager, also noted that the turnout at the carnival was quite massive.

She said that she and her children had taken horse rides, walked round the seashore and enjoyed the soothing sea breeze.

``The turnout is high and encouraging but government needs to do more in safeguarding the lives of fun seekers,’’ Chukwu said.

Nyako Warns Council Chairmen Against Extravagant Spending

Nyako gave the warning when he received the chairmen, who paid him a Christmas visit at Government House, Yola, and advised them to give priority attention to education, health and youth empowerment.

"The welfare of our children who are leaders of tomorrow must be given priority,. Our children must read and everything possible should be done to ensure that," he  said.

The governor expressed concern over some social ills, such as drug abuse among youths, and said his administration was considering making a law that would provide for the demolition of any house where hard drugs were  sold.

He urged the chairmen not to depend on monthly subventions from the state or the Federal Government  for the execution of  development projects but to explore other sources of funding, such as the Millennium Development Goal Office and UN agencies.

Earlier, the spokesman for the chairmen,  Alhaji Sahabo Aliyu, said they were at Government House to pay Christmas homage and express their loyalty and support to the government.

Meanwhile, members of the Association of Physically challenged Persons in Adamawa have called on the state government to pay their nine months salary arrears to enable them to enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Chairman of the Association, Malam Abubakar Hosere, made the appeal when he led  members to pay a Christmas visit to Nyako at Government House, Yola.

Hosere said, ``105 members given appointment by the state government in April were yet to start enjoying their salaries. Also, some of us  given political appointment are still waiting as the appointments are still hanging."

He  also said that more than 200 slots allocated to physically-challenged persons under the government empowerment programmes each year had been reduced to 100.

Hosere appealed to the governor to look into the problems to enable them to have a sense of belonging and restore their confidence, adding that members of the association were committed to his administration.

In his response, Nyako commended members of the association for their effort to be self-reliant and assured them of the government's commitment to support them.

Domestic Wing of MMA Gets Airfield Lighting

The equipment was deployed on the popular 2.7 km runway `18 Left’.

Mr Supo Atobatele, the General Manager (Public Affairs) of NAMA, announced this to Aviation Correspondents in Lagos.

He said that the deployment had put an end to more than five years of flight restrictions placed on daylight operations at the local wing of the airport.

``The absence of the airfield lighting on the runway for half a decade had forced the domestic airlines to land after sunset at the international wing of the airport,’’ he said.

Atobatele said that the development had compelled domestic aircraft at MMA to burn extra fuel to taxi down to their various terminals before disembarking their passengers.

``This looks like a Christmas gift to the airlines, travellers and Nigerians in general.

``It is made possible by the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring speedy clearance of passengers and their goods by the Customs at the domestic terminal of the MMA.

``It is also due to the foresight of the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, who ensured quality service delivery at the nation's airports,’’ he said.

``In all, 66 KALKIT brands of emergency airfield lights and additional two approach lights had been deployed by NAMA engineers,’’ he added.

KALKIT is the airfield lighting system that was certified by International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (UKCAA).

Atobatele said: ``This means that the product is of international standard and safe for deployment in any part of the world.’’

He quoted Mr Nnamdi Udoh, the Managing Director of NAMA, as commending the commitment of the engineers.

``They have defied all the family pressures at this Yuletide to deliver the immediate deployment of this vital navigational facility on the runway,’’ he added.

NRC Transports 450 Recruits to Lagos

According to reports, the new recruits had just finished their training at the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria and were posted to Lagos State for service.

Mr Adekunle Ayeni, the Railway District Manager (RDM), Northern District, told newsmen in Zaria that the corporation has been re-positioned to render quality and reliable services.

Speaking later to newsmen after the soldiers left, the RDM said ``we want to assure Nigerians of quality and reliable services, as the new recruits will arrive in Lagos after 25 hours’’.

Reports say that the passengers’ train with five coaches took off from Zaria at 1.15 p.m and was expected to arrive in Lagos at 2.15 p.m on Thursday.

Ayeni called for patronage from government agencies, private organisations and individuals ``as their contributions towards the revitalisation of the rail system’’.

While commending the efforts of the Federal Government towards reviving the railways, the manager appealed for more funding to enable the corporation serve Nigerians better.

He assured that the essence of re-introducing rail services was to provide efficient and effective transportation of goods and people across Nigeria.

Reports say that Col. Sa'id Jibril-Balarabe, the Commander, Recruit Centre, Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, led the soldiers to the railway station where they boarded the train.

Balarabe declined making comments on the mode of transportation but it was gathered that the recruits were heading to Lagos for their first posting.

Lagos Generates 10,000 Tonnes of Waste Daily - LAWMA

Mr Ola Oresanya, the Managing Director of the Authority made the fact known in an interview in Lagos.

He said that given the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos State, it was expected that large volumes of waste would be generated by the people regularly.

Oresanya identified indiscriminate dumping of refuse as a major challenge to the agency during the year.

``In Lagos we generate daily average of about 10,000 metric tonnes. And you know what 1,000 tonnes looks like; 1,000 tonnes will fill 100 trailers.

``The core challenge here is just the habit of the people.

``Lagosians still have this bad habit of still throwing wastes from their cars and still dumping wastes in unauthorised areas.

``Though the habit is reducing but it’s a major one and we are addressing it,’’ he said.

On the policy of commercial drivers having waste bins in their vehicles, Oresanya said that the idea had not really improved the hygiene of Lagos.

``Waste bin in vehicle, well, I don’t see any relevance with that and public hygiene.

``To me, I don’t see any relevance with that. If you have a waste bin in the bus and I am sitting at the back, do I want to throw waste from the head of the people there to throw in the bin?

``What we tell the transport workers is to make sure that when they get to their garage, they sweep their vehicles and we have bins in garages where they put these things. And if you have a car, you can put wastes in your carpet and  once you get to where you are going, you clean it up,’’ he said.

Oresanya said LAWMA planned to roll out 30,000 new roller bins to further enhance evacuation of wastes in the state.

He said the roller bins would be given to residents, who had paid for land use charges.

``Residents, who already have the bins will not be considered because this is a revolving system.

``As people pay the land use charge, they get one waste bin free and the charge is ploughed back to buy more bins for distribution to other areas,’’ he said.

He said that the ban on cart pushers collecting waste from residents for a fee was still in force but that their activities could not be eradicated totally in some areas.

Oresanya said that the agency was making efforts to see that more Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators were licensed to service more locations.

He said that the PSPs were agitating for the review of charges but that the authority was looking into the request.

Reports say that currently PSP operators charged N500 per flat and N200 per shop monthly for waste collection.

Rihanna, Chris Brown Spend Christmas Together at Lakers Game

Rihanna and Chris Brown celebrated Christmas together by attending the Los Angeles Lakers vs. New York Knicks game at the Staples Center Tuesday, Dec. 25.

They were "laughing and chatting" says an eyewitness.

The twosome, who sat courside together, "looked happy together," the source adds.

Rihanna, 24, wore a midriff-baring black top to the game and black pants. Brown, 23, also dressed in all black with a leather jacket.

The exes have been spending more time together recently and tweeting Instagram photos together. But the "We Found Love" singer alluded she was single on Twitter Dec. 18 by tweeting an E-card that read, "Being single sucks. The only thing I get to do anymore is whatever the f--k I want to do."

TCN assures Nigerians of steady electricity supply

Mr Jonathan Ndiagwaralukwe, the Executive Director (Systems Operations) of the TCN, gave the assurance in Abuja, while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

``We are promising steady electricity not only during the Yuletide but also throughout the year; we are moving the sector forward.

``We are saying Nigerians deserve steady electricity supply and one of the cardinal points of this government is regular power day or night.

``All the efforts made in the past to improve the sector are gradually yielding fruits; we expect that the tempo would be sustained because all the investments made in the rehabilitation of power stations, transmission lines and even in power distribution are coming on-stream.

``Also, new projects are being inaugurated, especially the National Integration Power Projects (NIPPs) and new power stations.

``As regards steady gas supply to our thermal stations, which has remained a thorny issue; there is an improvement. Power stations are now getting gas and new NIPPs are coming on-stream,’’ he said

Ndiagwaralukwe reiterated that electricity supply would henceforth be stable and regular in the country, as the TCN had put requisite facilities in place to facilitate steady power supply.

He said that the TCN had installed new electricity transformers across the country, while reinforcing existing power transmission lines.

He stressed that the power sector was being overhauled via sustained investments in electricity generation, transmission and distribution, adding that this would enhance power supply to the people considerably.

Ndiagwaralukwe, however, urged electricity consumers to settle their bills promptly and regularly, particularly now that electricity supply situation had improved appreciably.

He, nonetheless, bemoaned the attitude of some people who burned bushes where PHCN’s installations were located, adding that some individuals were even fond of excavating sand near PHCN's facilities.

Ndiagwaralukwe stressed the bush burning and excavation of sand near PHCN’s facilities could endanger power supply and cause blackouts for the citizens.

He urged all Nigerians to vigilantly guard all PHCN facilities in their neighbourhoods, while reporting any act of vandalism to the police.

Nigerian pilgrims entertain visitors at Wailing Wall in Jerusalem

The Wailing Wall is the relic of the ancient wall which surrounded the Jewish Temple's courtyard and it is one of the holy sites in Israel.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hundreds of visitors, pilgrims and adherents of the Jewish religion, who visited the wall, watched with admiration as the Nigerian pilgrims sang and danced.

A tourist guide, Mrs Edna Halda, told the pilgrims that the Romans ceded a little section of the wall to the Jews after the destruction of the temple during an invasion in 70 AD.

She said that the section was left for the Jews to come, cry and celebrate the destruction of the temple; hence the naming of the relic as the ``Wailing Wall.’’

``It is simply called the Wailing Wall because people cry by the wall,’’ Halda said.

The pilgrims had earlier prayed for themselves and the nation by the wall.

They also dropped their written prayer requests by the wall, in line with the Orthodox Jewish traditions.

Many injured as explosion rocks building packed with firecrackers in Lagos

Witnesses said the explosion went off around 9.30a.m as the city marked Boxing Day amid a lull in business activities.

The building is said to be located on Oko Awo Street in the popular Jankara area of Lagos, close to King Ado Secondary School.

A resident said the fire broke out when a small boy ignited a firecracker popularly known as ‘knockout,’ which hit some of the stocks of unsold fireworks in the building.

Fire fighters, rescue agencies and policemen swiftly deployed on the scene and battled the huge blaze.

Within minutes of the explosion, the fire spread to a nearby building, sending hundreds of residents, traders and shoppers fleeing in the usually boisterous market area.

No fewer than eight multi-storey buildings and 10 cars were consumed as the raging fire spread, aided by the dry harmattan wind.

Initially, no death was recorded although many injured persons while rushed to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.

However, as rescue operations got underway, one corpse was noticed.

There were initial speculations around the country that a bomb had exploded in Lagos while a report said a plane crashed in the city.

Spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau shuaibu, confirmed the incident in an SMS to PUNCH.

“NEMA has mobilised response agencies and volunteers to an explosion in a building suspected to be loaded with ‘knockouts’ in Jankara area of Lagos. Search and Rescue Officers of NEMA had a hectic time to reach the place due to traffic and crowds,” he said.

Firecrackers are banned in Nigeria although it is a common fare during Christmas and New Year celebrations in the country.

FRSC records 94 deaths in 191 accidents in five days

A statement issued by Mr Jonas Agwu, the Public Education Officer of the Commission, quoted Mr Osita Chidoka, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, as giving the figure.

Chidoka gave the statistics after an aerial patrol on Tuesday.

The commission identified over-speeding as one of the major causes of the crashes.

The Chief Executive Officer of the FRSC expressed serious concern over the development.

He said: ``It is an attitudinal issue as this year witnessed rehabilitation of major corridors of the highways.

``People tend to disregard traffic laws on speed limits and accelerate beyond recommended speed.

``This has resulted in the figures we have witnessed in the last five days.

``However, we have devised measures to address this unpleasant development.’’

The statement noted that the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Road Maintenance Agency had rehabilitated many roads.

It noted that the rehabilitation was carried out after the report of an audit conducted by the FRSC was submitted.

The aerial patrol took the team, led by Chidoka, to the Abuja-Lokoja, Lokoja-Okene, Asaba-Onitsha highways and the 9th mile corner in Enugu State, among others.

``The purpose of the surveillance is to identify areas of gridlock and resolve them to ease traffic flow,’’ the statement added

Egbin power plant in Lagos generates 1,030 MW - CEO

Uzoigwe told the Newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos that five of the six turbines of the plant were now working at full capacity.

The Egbin plant power generation dropped from 1,080mw to 600mw on Dec. 5, because of a national system collapse.

The collapse led to a shutdown of the station.

Uzoigbe assured that the station would meet its generation capacity of 1,320mw fully as the unit six, which was faulty, was being repaired.

He said: ``Egbin is generating at 1,030 megawatts capacity on five turbines, which is being distributed based on demand.

``When all the units are working to capacity, we will distribute in full blast.

``What we are doing is to maintain and improve on existing generation.’’

Uzoigwe denied the insinuation that the Egbin plant had been shut for its inability to generate power.

``Over the years, we have had problems of obsolete equipment and spare parts.

``But since government started tackling the problems of the power sector very seriously, things are picking up gradually.

``It is only the sixth turbine that is still down, but government is making necessary arrangement to revive it.

``By the grace of God, we will be able to bring it back and be in a position to approach the 1,320 megawatts.’’

Uzoigbe said that contract for repair of the faulty turbine was awarded to Marubeni Power International, a Japanese company, on Dec. 19.

``The sixth turbine, which contributes 200mw to the national grid, is expected to be repaired within 90 days.

The Federal Government pledged to commit N1.5 billion to fund the repair of the faulty turbine.

The Egbin Power Station is the biggest electricity-generating plant in the country.

The station has six turbines, each with a capacity of 220mw.

Anglican Communion seeks permanent solution to terrorism, kidnapping

Okoh made the appeal during a sermon at a Christmas Day service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Abuja.

In the service attended by President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan and members of the first family, Okoh said Nigeria needs ``freedom from terrorists, kidnappers, armed robbery and political wickedness’’.

He said freedom for prisoners was part of the message of Christmas and asked all to pray for the end of the ``harassment by terrorists in Nigeria.

Okoh said: ``If you look at this church environment you will see so many security men on duty.

``It is not everybody that can bear with this kind of situation; since the emergence of terrorists, many people no longer go to church and many select the day they go.

``So it is our duty and prayer that in the coming year, Nigeria will know perfect security and that men and women will return to normal life.

``And nobody will stop anybody from visiting anywhere; if you want to go to Maiduguri or Kaura Namoda, you should be free to go.''

The cleric also expressed concern that kidnapping in the country was being fuelled by greed and ``love of money’’.

``This type of people, we cannot justify them by talking of unemployment; the kidnapper is not interested in unemployment, because you cannot pay him.

``They have become used to spending big money and if from one kidnapping he gets N50 million, tell me where you can employ such a person?’’

Earlier, the primate wove his sermon around the theme of the ''Messiah’s presence in our midst’’ and based his message from Isaiah, Chapter 9 and the gospel of John chapter 1.

He said Jesus Christ came into the world to give eternal salvation, redemptive light, peace and hope to the poor.

The leader of Anglicans emphasised that Jesus mission of giving succour to the poor should be a ``guiding principle’’ to all political, religious and traditional rulers.

On this, he commended Jonathan’s administration for its efforts at encouraging food security through local rice production and encouraging of consumption of cassava bread.

He also observed that government was bringing hope to the poor by the current efforts aimed at resuscitating the moribund railway sector and fixing the nation's electricity problems

Adeboye urges Christians to embrace righteousness

Adeboye said at the `2012 Lets Go A-Fishing', a soul-winning project of the church, that the faithful should embrace righteousness so as to attract God's favour.

The programme, with the theme: `Highly Favoured’ was organised by the RCCG, National Headquarters at the Centre for Management Development, Shangisha, Lagos.

He said that any nation with the fear of God and filled with righteousness, would earn Gods’ favour.

``When God decides to favour you, it does not matter where you are, the favour of God will surely locate you.

``Once the favour of God locates you, it changes your destiny, you will get to the top and the blessing will flow to others.

``When God decides to favour you, you are empowered, it turns you into anointing and it brings you in contact with greatness.

``When God decided to favour David, He gave him power,’’ Adeboye said.

The cleric urged the congregation to live a holy life.

Vice-President's residence is not my personal property -- Sambo

Sambo was reacting to controversies in the media over the building of the permanent residence of the vice-president in Abuja.

A statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Malam Umar Sani, in Abuja, stated that ``the new residence under construction is not the personal property of Vice-President Namadi Sambo.''

It noted that the Aguda House, the current temporary residence of the vice- president was designated in the Abuja Master Plan as Presidential Guest House.

The statement noted that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which was saddled with the responsibility of providing accommodation for deserving government officials, took the decision of building a befitting accommodation to any Nigerian Vice-President.

``It should be known that the concept and choice of a residential accommodation was purely by the professionals in the FCTA and neither has he ever interfered with the budgetary requirements or cost associated with the construction.

``The public should note that in the Federal Capital Territory 2012 Appropriation, not a single kobo was included in the budget for the residence.

``It should, therefore, be carefully understood and appreciated that the vice- president has nothing to do with the construction of the new residence in question, as it is not his personal property but the residence of any Nigerian Vice-President,'' it said.

The statement further said that  Sambo should, therefore, not be connected with the expenditure of the project.

DG ASCON Laments State of Lagos/Badagry Expressway

Peters said in Badagry, Lagos, that the condition of the road is discouraging people from participating in the programmes being offered by the college.

``It is a shame that the road, linking Nigeria with other West African countries, is in such horrible condition. Motorists, who ply the road, have always given terrible account of their experience on the road.

``The road has also discouraged people from coming to our college for training courses because they do not want to go through such experiences.

``The road need to be repaired in time because it is a shame to this great nation,’’ he said, pointing out that the traffic congestion would be worse during this festive period.

According to him, a lot of people will be travelling on that road and this will lead to traffic congestion. Some motorist drive against traffic and this also adds to the congestion.

``Something must be done and it needs to be carried out swiftly.’’

He pleaded with the Federal and Lagos State Governments to collaborate in rehabilitating the road.

Religious Leaders Call for Peace, Security During Christmas

They made the call in their separate Christmas messages in Enugu.

In his message, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Rt. Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma, urged Christians to use the period to preach and promote peace rather than engage in social vices.

``There should be adequate security of churches, particularly in the North while those in the South should watch out for kidnappers.

``Let us believe in Christ, abstain from sin, envy, jealousy, corruption and every evil acts this Christmas season,’’ he said.

A catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Amarube of St Joseph’s Parish Okpatu in Udi Local Government Area, urged Christians to celebrate Christmas with peace and love.

``Christmas is about giving out to people. It is about justice and peaceful coexistence, being spiritual and not materialistic,’’ he said.

Also, the General Overseer of the Throne of Grace Church, Rev. Azuka Obi, urged Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with moderation and help those around them.

Enugu Residents Celebrate Christmas in Filth

According to reports, no part of the coal city is exempted from the filth, as the mountains of refuse dominate the landscape of the town.

Spills from dumpsites in the various parts of the town have encroached on roads, reducing them to single lanes.

The refuse heap at Liberty Junction in Abakpa Nike had virtually covered the road as of Monday morning, with disused fridges and other heavy items littering the place.

Some of the residents of the coal city, who spoke with newsmen, expressed disgust with the situation, describing it as an eyesore.

Mr Nonso Igwesi, a resident of Trans-Ekulu, wondered how the people could be celebrating in the midst of filth and called on the state government to clear the refuse urgently.

A resident of Uwani, Dr Stan Madu, said the people of the area had set the heaps of refuse on fire, adding that the smoke emitting from the fire was offensive to the residents.

Acknowledging the situation, the acting Governor of the state, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi, said on Friday that efforts in the waste and environmental management had left much to be desired.

Onyebuchi said, however, that the state had acquired three mechanised sweepers, 1,040 dumpsters and 10 compactors to be put to use before the end of the year.

The state government had earlier in the month sacked the Managing Director of the Enugu State Waste Management Agency (ESWAMA), Mrs Chinyere Ogakwu, and appointed Mr Dominic Okonkwo to replace her.

Kano Govt Will Not Reverse Closure of Sabon Gari Drugs Market

This is contained in a statement signed by the Director Press and Public Relations, Malam Halilu Dantiye, in Kano on Sunday.

It stated that the action was with support of National Agency for Food, Drugs and Administration Control (NAFDAC), to crackdown on all unauthorised sale of drugs and other items.

The statement said Kwankwaso made this known during an interactive session with Patent Medicine Dealers, top security officials and other stakeholders at Government House, Kano.

It said NAFDAC had set up a committee to tackle illicit sale of drugs, adding that the committee had  confiscated and destroyed fake and adulterated drugs worth more than N600 million.

According to the statement, NAFDAC has also discovered and sealed warehouses containing illicit sale of medicines.

``No government can stop the sale of drugs, we are not fighting anybody. What we are saying is that anyone who wants to sell drugs must abide by the rules.

``You can open a Chemist or a Mall to sell drugs but let it be duly approved by law in accordance with professional standards,” it added.

The statement said it was not in line with the best practices for drugs to sell openly in Sabon Gari market like vegetables or grains.

It said statistics had shown that Kano ranked number one in drug abuse in the country and urged the people to cooperate with NAFDAC and his administration to tackle the menace.

Responding, Chief Boniface Ibekwe, gave assurance that the traders would support the initiative and expressed optimism that the meeting would bridge the communication gap between government and patent medicine dealers.

Reports say that Kano government had directed the drug marketers at Sabon Gari to vacate the market.

The Area Controller, Mr Tunji Aremu, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos.

He said that the amount generated represented an increase of N13 billion over the amount generated in the corresponding period in 2011.

``Despite the challenges of modernisation and simplification of our operations, we have been able to generate a sum of N189 billion between Jan.1 and Nov. 30 into government coffers,’’ he said.

Aremu said the command targeted N22 billion monthly which translated to N264 for the entire year.

Daily Habits That Will Make You Happier

With that in mind, here are nine small changes that you can make to your daily routine that, if you're like most people, will immediately increase the amount of happiness in your life:

1. Start each day with expectation.

If there's any big truth about life, it's that it usually lives up to (or down to) your expectations. Therefore, when you rise from bed, make your first thought: "something wonderful is going to happen today." Guess what? You're probably right.

2. Take time to plan and prioritize.

The most common source of stress is the perception that you've got too much work to do.  Rather than obsess about it, pick one thing that, if you get it done today, will move you closer to your highest goal and purpose in life. Then do that first.

3. Give a gift to everyone you meet.

I'm not talking about a formal, wrapped-up present. Your gift can be your smile, a word of thanks or encouragement, a gesture of politeness, even a friendly nod. And never pass beggars without leaving them something. Peace of mind is worth the spare change.

4. Deflect partisan conversations.

Arguments about politics and religion never have a "right" answer but they definitely get people all riled up over things they can't control. When such topics surface, bow out by saying something like: "Thinking about that stuff makes my head hurt."

5. Assume people have good intentions.

Since you can't read minds, you don't really know the "why" behind the "what" that people do. Imputing evil motives to other people's weird behaviours adds extra misery to life, while assuming good intentions leaves you open to reconciliation.

6. Eat high quality food slowly.

Sometimes we can't avoid scarfing something quick to keep us up and running. Even so, at least once a day try to eat something really delicious, like a small chunk of fine cheese or an imported chocolate. Focus on it; taste it; savour it.

7. Let go of your results.

The big enemy of happiness is worry, which comes from focusing on events that are outside your control. Once you've taken action, there's usually nothing more you can do. Focus on the job at hand rather than some weird fantasy of what might happen.

8. Turn off "background" TV.

Many households leave their TVs on as "background noise" while they're doing other things. The entire point of broadcast TV is to make you dissatisfied with your life so that you'll buy more stuff. Why subliminally program yourself to be a mindless consumer?

9. End each day with gratitude.

Just before you go to bed, write down at least one wonderful thing that happened. It might be something as small as a making a child laugh or something as huge as a million dollar deal. Whatever it is, be grateful for that day because it will never come again.

Airtel Launches HD Voice Service in Nigeria

With the deployment, Airtel becomes the first mobile operator in Nigeria to launch HD Voice service in the country. The HD voice service will complement the operator’s HD data service, enabling telecoms consumers to enjoy a rich telephony experience.

HD Voice enables mobile operators to clearly differentiate their service offering with high quality voice calls on mobile networks. With HD, customers can talk normally and be heard clearly, without having to raise their voice, even in noisy environments.

According to Airtel, the service will enable more Nigerians to enjoy a more fulfilling Christmas celebration and enter the New Year in grand style as they connect to unite with friends, family members and loved ones across the country.

Speaking on the network innovation, the Chief Operating Officer, Deepak Srivastava said Airtel is committed to improving the quality and coverage of its network and also building the most robust network Infrastructure in Nigeria.

“We will keep raising the level of our investment in Nigeria. Today, we have the largest and widest 3.75G coverage in the country and we have recorded several milestones in network quality improvement and general customer experience.

“Only recently, we recorded huge success in our 4G Trial test in Lagos and now we have deployed HD Voice service across key 3.75G locations in the country. Indeed, this demonstrates our commitment to Nigerians, testifying to our corporate vision of becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he said.

HD Voice, or wideband audio, refers to the next-generation of voice quality for telephony. HD Voice more accurately reproduces the human voice with a wider frequency range. The result is significantly more natural sounding speech and a wider range of sounds promoting audio clarity and clear conversation.

With HD Voice, consumers can perceive the difference and the general sentiment is that the experience is more of “being in the same room” with the person on the other end of the phone line.

Customers with smartphones that support HD functionality can straight away experience the magic. Some of the handsets supporting HD functions are the relatively newer models of Samsung, Blackberry, Iphone 5, HTC, Sony, Nokia among others
