SSS arrests 6 in connection with the killing of Oyerinde

Ms Marilyn Ogar, the Deputy Director, Public Relations of the SSS, paraded the suspects, names withheld, on Wednesday in Abuja before newsmen.

Oyerinde was killed on May 4 by unknown gunmen at his residence located at No. 65, 2nd Ugbor Road, GRA, Benin City.

Marilyn said that three of the suspects killed Oyerinde, while the others ``are habitual buyers of stolen items''.

She said investigation had revealed that the careless statements made by one Ali Ihade, the security guard to Oyerinde, about ``the position of master in government’’ attracted the attention of the prime suspect.

The SSS spokesperson said the prime suspect plotted the robbery operation during which the late private secretary was killed.

``On the day of the robbery, the prime suspect specifically instructed other gang members to tie Ihade up, with his face down, before they entered Comrade Oyerinde’s residence.

She said the suspects confessed that Oyerinde was shot and killed by the prime suspect when the deceased attempted to hide himself under his bed.

``I believe Comrade Oyerinde was reaching out for a gun under the bed, so I shot him,’’ she quoted the suspect as saying.

Marilyn listed the items stolen from Oyerinde’s residence by the suspects after killing him as four blackberry phones, one Ipad, two galaxy pads, one laptop, a wedding ring and an unspecified amount of money.

She said the three guns used by the suspects in the robbery operation had been recovered by the service.

``The suspects are currently in the custody of the SSS and will soon be handed over to the police for criminal prosecution,’’ she said
