Olive Oil can Reduce Bad Cholesterol, Says Nutritionist

She told newsmen in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja that the high density cholesterol was the good one while the low density cholesterol was the bad one.

``Cholesterol is a chemical compound that is naturally produced by the body which is a combination of fat and steroid,’’she said.

Hassan said that about 80 per cent of the body's cholesterol was produced by the liver, while the rest came from our diet.

She explained that every human being had cholesterol in their body system, ``so when you take olive oil, it reduces the bad one and increases the good cholesterol in the body system.

``The good cholesterol prevents the risk of heart diseases and stroke,” she added.

The nutritionist also said that olive oil had been recommended for cooking in preference to vegetable oil.

``Olive oil protects the body, it is an anti-oxidant and does not cause any harm to the body.

``We do not need much oil in our diet, so if you can get the high quality olive oil and use at least two teaspoons per meal, that is good for the body,”she said.

Hassan advised that olive oil should be used for salad instead of salad cream or vinegar, saying ``all that is required is to sprinkle olive oil on the salad and eat it”.

She said research had shown that olive oil helped to prevent skin cancer when applied on the skin and was also used to relieve ear ache.

According to her, apart from the nutritional benefits of olive oil, there are also domestic and cosmetic uses for it

``The oil can be applied to the hair to protect it from damage and also to polish furniture and metals,’’she added.
