The Deputy General Secretary of the Alliance, Mr Asuzu Echezon, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
Echezon said government must a play the role of watchdog to improve the credibility in the extraction and exploration of oil resources in the country.
He stated that many Nigerians were not aware of the actual amount of crude oil being extracted on daily basis and stressed need for proper coordination of the sector.
``Government must reform the oil institutions and set a strong mechanism that will sanitise the wrong doings in the sector,'' he said.
He advised government to seek partnership with other international organisations to make oil exploration companies adhere to the ‘international moral business practises”.
He also urged the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources to rekindle its commitment toward transparency and accountability in all aspects of petroleum activities, including payments and revenues.
Echezon said that passing of the Petroleum Industry Bill would be the beginning of sanity in the oil sector and called on the government to ensure its proper implementation and enforcement, when passed.
He advocated the establishment of an institution saddled with responsibility of checks and balances, especially in ensuring objectivity on the taxes and royalties generated from the extractive industries.
