The CPC Chairman, Prince Tony Momoh, made the call in an Interview with reporters.
According to him, Nigeria will fare better under a regional structure as powers will not be over concentrated at the centre.
“We must devolve powers to the regions in a restructured Nigeria.''
Momoh also said that the 1999 Constitution should be retained, adding that the committee on the constitution review needed to take cognisance of the basic needs of the people, if there must be amendments at all.
“So we should not behave as if we have no constitution. How come I am a chairman of a political party? How come that Goodluck Jonathan is our President, if not for the existing constitution?
“Once upon the time, we were regionalised, now we have states. It is so because of the constitution.”
The party chieftain also commented on the controversial ``indigenes and settlers law'' issue in some states, saying there was only one citizenship in Nigeria.
Momoh pointed out that this could be achieved either by birth or naturalisation according to Chapter Three of the Constitution.
“The indigenes and settlers issue is a local matter, Plateau State, which has a big problem today is the only state in Nigeria I am aware of, that passed the law.
“Anybody that has been in Plateau State for 30 years is a free born of the state and there should not be any discrimination.”
He noted that Plateau was the only State where all forms of discriminations are currently perpetuated.
" If we abolish the existing states and politics becomes a service, rather than a business, all these problems will go."
