Arbitrary Change of Toothpaste May Cause Sore throat- Expert

Akinola said that this was due to different ingredients used to produce the paste.

He described the throat as a very sensitive area of the head which acclimatises easily to a particular paste.

“In most of the cases of sore throat I treated, I found out that they were caused because the patients are fond of using any toothpaste they come across,’’ he said.

He, however, said there was a natural way of treating the ailment as well as through the use of drugs.

“The easiest way of treating sore throat is to put warm water in a cup, squeeze some lemon juice in it, add enough salt, and drink a table spoon of it.

“If the ailment is not treated immediately, it can take a longer time to heal and it will continue to resurface from time to time,” Akinola said.

He urged Nigerians to stick to a particular toothpaste to prevent the ailment.

A medical author, Dr John Cunha, also said most cases of sore throat were caused by viruses or mechanical causes such as mouth breathing and could be treated successfully at home.

According to him, sore throat symptoms include pain, burning or scratching sensations at the back of the throat, pain when swallowing and tenderness in the neck.

“Sore throat symptoms may be accompanied by coughing, sneezing, fever and swollen lymph nodes.

“Home remedies for sore throat include saltwater gargles, sprays, lozenges and humidifiers,” he said.
