Adetunji said this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. According to him, food poisoning refers to a situation where a person gets an infection of the stomach and the digestive system from contaminated food or water.
``In this environment, the commonest cause of food poisoning is when one eats poorly cooked food and an example of this includes various types of salad.
“You know that salad is mainly eaten raw, made from fresh vegetables and other condiment.
“And, if in the process of handling this food item, proper hygienic methods are not followed, they can easily get contaminated.
“If you see where these vegetables are grown, the type of manure used is of fermented faeces.
“Maybe poultry waste, other animal waste or even grass that has been mixed with other heavily polluted materials like urine and so on.”
Adetunji said that the typical symptoms of food poisoning included abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. He said that the symptoms could begin to manifest shortly after the consumption of the poisonous food or a few hours after.
“In addition to vomiting and diarrhea, they may also cause cramps that are abdominal pain due to excessive contraction of intestinal muscles.”
He suggested the regular washing of hands as the best way to prevent the food poisoning.
“From what I have described, you can see that the prevention is very simple. Simple regular washing of hands with soap and water would have removed a lot of the bacteria on the hands of people who may be harbouring this agent.
“Covering food properly after preparation has been completed to make sure that dirty thing like flies don’t come have access to it, would go a long way. The third method of prevention of course is proper storage.”
