NIMET Official Wants Nigerians to Observe Weather Predictions

Nwoko, Deputy General Manager of NIMET in the southeast, told the newsmen in Enugu on Friday that the lack of interest in weather forecasts had adverse effects on Nigerians’ activities.

``It’s very, very important. Many of us wake up and go on daily basis without caring on what is going to happen.

``But it’s important to listen to changes in weather, how it’s going to affect your area. Then you take precautionary measures so as to avoid being impacted negatively, especially the farmers.’’

Nwoko said the agency would soon announce weather predictions for 2013.

``As an agency, we have put in place a lot of instruments and equipment to enable us to come up with better forecasts and predictions.

``When you go round the country, you’ll see that we have radar and wind share equipment.

``Even now, we have installed in Enugu here air quality measurement. That is to tell you at a particular point in time the level of impurities in the atmosphere which is functioning.’’

Nwoko said the agency was monitoring climate change and that the current heat wave in parts of the country was the result of normal climate fluctuations.
