Raw Materials Council Warns Against Use of Harmful Substances to Force Fruits to Ripen

Onwualu said in Abuja on Monday that some of the chemicals that were not organic based, which were applied on fruits could be harmful to human health.

Organic substances refer to a class of molecules that contain carbon and this class of molecules include everything likely to be considered edible.

He, therefore, advised that people should be careful on the kind of fruit ripening substance used, as some could be injurious to the health.

The director-general suggested the use of organic based substance that would not have health implications, and called for a regulation that would discourage the use chemicals for fruit ripening.

Onwualu said that the problem of fruits ripening was an issue for the regulatory agencies, such as Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the NAFDAC and should be taken seriously.

He urged the regulatory agencies to do more checks on those, who used non-organic chemicals to ripen fruits and bring them to book.

``Some of the chemicals are dangerous; what the council recommends is that if people must use fruit ripening materials, we recommend more of organic based ripening substances.

``Because the ones that are not organic have health implications. If we must use those ones that are not organic, we must use them according to regulations.

``Because there are regulations that says it must not be more than a certain concentration so that it does not affect the health of people,’’ Onwualu said.

He advised Nigerians to embrace natural means of ripening fruits and said that the natural means of ripening fruits was still the best.
