Nigerians Urged to Buy Made in Nigeria Goods

The rector stated this on Monday at the opening of an ``Exhibition of Innovation`` organised by the polytechnic, inside its campus in Edo.

She urged Nigerians to reduce their penchant for foreign made goods.

Idogho said if the efforts at industrialisation must be successful, Nigerian consumers must prefer to buy made in Nigeria goods.

The rector said, ``buying Nigeria-made goods is a worthy contribution towards expanding the country’s marke

`` And in the process, the much needed jobs will be created, thereby reducing our high youth unemployment.

``We must be conscious of the fact that the poor quality products from some Asian countries we scoffed at some three decades ago, are now the preferred products we run after today.

``We must begin to realise that we must make our mistakes in product development and branding, in order to produce and achieve the high quality ones we so much desire.

``To achieve overall industrial development of Nigeria, our countrymen must patronise what is indigenously produced.``

Idogho called for ``synergy of efforts`` of all tertiary institutions, research institutes and the private sector, toward making Nigerian goods meet local and international standards.

``The reason for this is that, whereas tertiary institutions can do research and design prototypes, they have not got the funds to commercialise their inventions.

``Higher institutions that do researches cannot also market their research products,`` she noted.

Speaking on the exhibition, the rector said the polytechnic believed that the exhibited products and research efforts could be patented.

``The thrust of our efforts is geared at using local items to make products that can be commercialised by the private sector, for the benefit of Nigerians and for export,” she stated.
