Gynaecologist Tasks Nigerian Men on Regular Testicular Examination

Igboeli said in Abuja on Thursday that testicular examination would help detect any form of abnormality around the male reproductive organ.

He described testicles as an important male reproductive organ, which produced sperm, located in the scrotum under the penis.

``Testicular examination is an important part of a routine physical examination for every teenage boy and man.’’

Igboeli said that examination included physical examination of the groin and genital organ comprising the penis, scrotum and testicles.

He recommended that the checks would help to detect the presence of lumps, swellings, shrinking among others from the ages of 15 years to 40 years.

The doctor said the best time to do self-examination was during or after a bath, when the skin of the scrotum was relaxed.

He said that during examination, the testicles should be checked one at a time, by holding the testis with both hands and rolling it gently between the fingers.

Igboeli explained that the men should look and feel for any hard lump, change in the shape and size of the testis and seek immediate medical attention if any abnormality was noticed.

The gynaecologist said that testicular cancer was one of the most common cancers in young men, adding that it was usually discovered by the men themselves or by their partners as a lump or enlarged swollen testicle.

The free encyclopedia says testicular self-examination is a recommended medical practice by which external feeling of the testicles can act as a first-warning for testicular cancer.

It also said testicular cancer is a significant killer of teenage boys and younger men (roughly ages 15–35 or 40), doctors recommend monthly self-examination.
