Nigerian journalists enthralled by London Olympics opening

Obi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in London on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium that the opening was ``splendid’’.

He argued that the ceremonies lived up to the pre-opening media hype across the world.

The sports analyst also observed that the ceremonies touched on the evolutionary history of Britain spanning the economy, politics, culture and music captured in an entraining style that left many asking for a continuation, even when the script had ended.

``The 27 million pounds sterling spent on the opening is well worth it.

``It had a lot of intellectual implication and was almost the best of the three-time history of Olympic Games hosting by Great Britain.’’

``The best of Britain, vitalising, invigorating and sheer industry, brought with colour; not the extravagance of yesterday, but a tinge of colour; the rawness and perhaps the heritage of a people who over time have been part of history.

``Three times, they got it right this time and they did it right; well perhaps just a pathway to a culmination of the best of Britain, and tonight (July 27), everything that represents the intrinsic strength of the British was on parade and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

``From the angelic to the poetic, to the realistic and then of course to the memories; who really will forget ``Hey Jude, don’t be afraid? ‘’ Great moments, 27 million pounds; is the value of this ceremony.’’

Another Nigerian journalist, Onochie Anibeze of Vanguard Newspapers said a significant aspect of the British was showcased, including the rural life as well as the great industrial revolution recalled with colour.

Femi Ajayi, Assistant Secretary of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), said he was particularly thrilled by the manner with which Queen Elizabeth was brought into the Olympic Stadium to declare the Games open.

``It was an unrivalled ceremony in the annals of Olympic Games history,’’ he said
