Delta Govt Summons Principal, Teachers for Abandoning School

The school officials were absent on a day the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, paid an unscheduled visited the school.

This is contained in a statement signed by the public relations officer of ministry, Mr Dennis Medi, in Asaba on Thursday.

``On arrival at the school the commissioner met only one teacher and one security guard and there was not even a student around,’’ the statement said.

Already, the concerned officials have been directed to report immediately at the ministry’s headquarters in Asaba to defend their long absence from duty.

The statement said that the commissioner’s visit was based on reports on the attitude of the principal and teachers to work.

``It was discovered that the continued long absence of teachers from the school caused the students to stay away from school.”

It adding that the record showed that the last time a teacher taught students in the school was on June 28.

According to the statement, the commissioner wondered how students in the school can compete with their counterparts in other schools.

The statement restated that there was no way some persons’ names would remain in government’s payroll when they were not working.

It said that that during an ``interactive session with some leaders in the community, the commissioner was told that the teachers refused to reside in the community in spite of the free accommodation provided for them”.
