Generator Sound Can Cause Ear Impairment - Specialist

Lilly-Tariah, an ENT consultant with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, told reporters on Thursday that generator sounds could cause ear impairment.

He said that loud music and closeness to public address system must also be avoided as they could be of health risk to the ear.

``There’s a level of sound, level of noise that when exposed to the ear is capable of damaging the hearing itself.

``So, loud speakers, listening to loud music, the generator sound, sitting close to public address system, all these are things that are capable of damaging our hearing.

``And when these things happen, we lose the pleasure of having the privilege of hearing and this damaging of ear can also occur in our workplaces.``

The specialist advocated the provision of hearing protective devices in noisy workplaces in order to protect the health of the workers.

Lilly-Tariah commended establishments that had provided such devices in their workplaces and urged others, especially manufacturing companies, to do so.

He called on Nigerians to cultivate the culture of taking good care of their ear in order to ensure its effective functioning.

``If you look at the consequences of what can happen if the ear doesn’t function well, then you appreciate the enormity of why it has to function.

``For a child, a child learns to say only what it hears, therefore, if a child doesn’t hear, it stands that the child won’t be able to talk and that means the child won’t be able to lean, which means, all the schools we have will be useless if we can’t learn.

``Now to us as an adult, the discussions and communications depend on our ability to hear, and besides the hearing function, the ear also serve as an organ that brings about balance.``

He explained that the structure responsible for balance was housed and stored in the ear.

``That was the reason when the ear was not working well, it would be difficult to make a movement.``
