Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney was set to be assessed by the club's medical staff on Sunday after a bout of tonsillitis ruled him out of the 1-0 defeat against Norwich City.
The manager is likely to make a decision based on Monday's training session before the team's departure for Istanbul.
"He's had tonsillitis," Sir Alex told MUTV on Saturday. "We hope he'll be in [on Sunday] - we'll see what he's like then.
"If he does [come in] hopefully we can get him ready for Tuesday."
Phil Jones, meanwhile, is expected to make his first appearance of the season in central defence. The 20-year-old has missed the start of the campaign with a knee injury.
In goal, however, Anders Lindegaard could continue as David de Gea continues to recover from the removal of two wisdom teeth last week.
