Flood Sweeps Away 20 houses in Cross River

Eye-witnesses recounted that the flood was caused by a landslide, which blocked River Kaala, the river traversing the community.

The witnesses said that the landslide temporarily changed the course of the river and diverted its waters into residential areas of the town.

One of the eyewitnesses from Buanchor, Mr Peter Bette, said the ``disaster struck after four days of torrential rains’’.

He said that he visited the area to assess the extent of damage to a secondary school in the community.

``A landslide, which occurred following the downpour changed the course of River Kaala, which swept away more than 20 houses in our community, including buildings in the Community Secondary School,’’ he said.

Bette, who is also the Executive Secretary, Boki Local Government Education Authority, said the disaster took residents by surprise and rendered many of them homeles

Another eyewitness, Mrs Evelyn Abang, said that all the bridges and culverts leading into Buanchor from Katabang community had been swept away.

The eye-witnesses appealed to the Cross River Government and the state Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the victims.
