Ndukwe told newsmen in Umuahia on Monday that recent findings showed that irritable bowel syndrome was a disorder in bowel habits, which was common among people with emotional problems.
``The brain and the intestine are connected through the nervous system making it possible for both to exchange signals.
``And these signals affect the function and reaction of the bowel,'' he said.
Ndukwe said that the nerves were more active when an individual was stressed, thereby causing the intestines to be more sensitive and contract more.
He added that the effects of this health condition such as abdominal pains, constipation or diarrhoea; can be embarrassing and the syndrome has no definitive treatment.
Ndukwe, however, said that palliative measures, such as stress management, regular exercise and eating good diet, could help to prevent or ease the health condition.
