Spokesman for the Ogun Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, newsmen that the driver died when 10 armed robbers, who had laid ambush on the expressway, shot sporadically in a bid to escape from the police.
Adejobi said that policemen from Ishara Division swung into action upon being alerted and were able to dislodge the bandits who were armed with AK 47 riffles and other sophisticated weapons.
He, however, said the Police Commissioner, Ikemefuna Okoye, had given directive to fish out the robbers who escaped with bullets wounds.
Adejobi said the police boss warned that the command would not tolerate any incident of robbery in the state.
Also speaking on the incident, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, the Ogun Sector Commander of the FRSC, said the commercial bus involved in the incident was marked Lagos XZ 271 FKJ.
Omiyale said the white bus was heading to Ibadan from Lagos when the incident occurred at about 10 a.m.
``The robbers shot sporadically at the driver and of course, he swerved into the bush before he died, leaving three of the passengers injured and in critical condition,'' he said.
He said the rescue team of the FRSC responded on time to take the victims to the hospital as well as control traffic on the busy expressway.
The FRSC boss said the body of the driver had been deposited at the mortuary of Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital where victims were also receiving treatment.
