Drink adequate water to reduce chances of cancer -- Nutritionist

Amiengheme, Nutritionist and President of Advocacy for the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases Initiative (APNDI), an NGO, made the call in an interview in Abuja.

He said that adequate water intake helped in building the immune system to become resistant to cancer.

Amiengheme said acid was  responsible for 80 per cent of diseases including cancer, noting that  drinking enough water would prevent accumulation of waste in the body.

He said adequate water consumption was important for those who already have prostate cancer and it also maintained good health and a strong immune system to battle against cancer.

`` Certain hormones affected by the cancer also regulate bodily processes like water regulation, and when the body is dehydrated, these hormones are unable to work effectively.

Amiengheme added that drinking water can significantly reduce joint and back pain.

He said drinking of adequate water would help flush out wastes, transports nutrients, and regulates body the temperature.

The nutritionist said it would also help keep the skin hydrated during therapy, which would help reduce the dry skin syndrome caused by Hepatitis C virus (HCV) medications.

``Many people on HCV therapy experience the Ribavirin cough. Water can help lubricate the throat, which results in less coughing.”

Amiengheme said adequate water consumption aids the digestive system, help to avoid constipation and other digestive problems and help replace fluids lost during a bout of diarrhea.

He advocated for more doctors in nutritional medicine to enable them provide dietary advice to patients.

Amiengheme  said majority of doctors when attending to their patients  treat only the symptoms, leaving the causes of the diseases untreated.

``Most doctors are not trained in nutrition medicine, they are only trained in pharmaceutical medicine, they know their pharmaceutical drugs, treat only the symptoms, leaving the causes of the diseases untreated.

``Nutritional Medicine practitioner views food, diet and nutritional supplements from the perspective of their therapeutic potential.

``Providing dietary advice to clients and prescribing nutritional supplements to assist in the treatment of a broad range of health conditions.''

Amiengheme decried that the country’s life span of about 46 years was due to the consumption of processed foods.

He told NAN that the NGO has been involved in educating people on how to live a healthy life by organising programmes at churches.
