Mr Damian Agbanelo, the Director, National Technical Service of SON in Abia, told newsmen on Tuesday that the markets raided included the Ariaria International Market and the Electrical Parts Market
He said that the organisation had visited the markets about two weeks ago to remind the traders of the dangers inherent in dealing in fake and sub-standard goods.
Agbanelo said that in spite of the warning, some traders could still display goods abhorred by law.
He stressed that the organisation would not hesitate to seal any shop found displaying sub-standard goods.
He said that SON received reports that some people do not only produce sub-standard goods, but fake the products of established companies.
Agbanelo reiterated that SON’s zero tolerance on sub-standard goods was to check practices that were capable of impacting negatively on the nation’s economy and the people.
According to him, some of the chemicals used in producing the foams react to human flesh.
“The standard to be maintained by foam manufacturers is known and we will not relent in upholding that standard.
“What they are using to manufacture most foam here are junks and they are killing the economy of genuine industries in particular and Nigeria as a whole.”
Bede Obiya, the Head of the organisation’s Special Taskforce on Sub-standard Goods, urged consumers to go for goods that would give value for their money.
Obiya advised them to always buy cables made in Nigeria because the cables had been tested and found to have met the required standards.
