Diabetes in Children Can be Prevented, Says Physician

Uba, who gave the advice in an interview in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday, told pregnant mothers, especially diabetic ones, to always seek medical attention.

He explained that complications could arise when pregnant mothers resort to self medication.

The medical doctor said that one of the predisposing factors of diabetes was hereditary, as it could manifest if any of the parents of the child had the condition.

Uba said that the chances of a child being diabetic were always higher when both parents were affected.

He, however, explained that when either of the parents was diabetic, the chance becomes lower especially if the mother was affected.

He identified causes of diabetes in children to include infection, and obesity.

According to him, some infection cause damages to part of the pancreas called beta cell, which is responsible for the production of the hormone called insulin.

``Insulin is the hormone that takes care of blood glucose in the body and if anything destroys the beta cells of the pancreas, there will be subnormal or decrease in the insulin production, therefore diabetes will occur,” he explained.

The doctor also said that the kind of food children ate could predispose them to diabetes, as it could lead to some  infection.

Uba therefore, recommended six months exclusive breast feeding and subsequent six months complementary breast feeding, dietary control as well as the use of oral drugs and insulin.

He also advised women to observe cleanliness while feeding their children.

The doctor further suggested constant exercise as a form of reducing diabetes in children.
